Tally, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, is nearing the end of her years-long journey home from the shores of Wales to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. On 31 August 2023, the Houston Zoo animal health team of veterinarians gave the international superstar a medical check-up to ensure she is healthy after her transatlantic adventure. After being discovered washed up on the shores of Talacre beach, Flintshire, in 2021, Tally's fate took a dramatic turn when she was found by a group of dedicated individuals. . The turtle, one of the rarest and most endangered species of sea turtle in the world, found herself far from her natural habitat, an unusual sighting in the U.K. A group of animal experts from the Anglesey Sea Zoo quickly intervened, and Tally's journey towards recovery began. The circumstances of Tally's stranding were attributed to a combination of factors, including a change in weather conditions. Tally was declared fit for travel and flew as a cargo passenger on a commercial airline from Heathrow to Houston. Upon her arrival in Texas, Tally was immediately transported to the Houston Zoo, where a team of experts conducted a thorough examination. Much to everyone's relief, Tally was found to be strong, vigorous, and healthy, defying the odds of her 22-hour long transit. She will now spend a few days in a deep-water tank at the Houston Zoo to regain her muscle strength and will be released back into the wild.
