The video shows mother Tania, who weighed 1.5 tonnes in the latter stages of her pregnancy, wriggling in her enclosure before the baby male walrus freed itself in a burst of blood.

Keepers estimate he weighs 60 kilograms though he has not yet been put on the scales. He joins four other walruses at the Pairi Daiza zoo in the south of Belgium.

He was conceived naturally when 17-year-old Tania was taken to Hamburg to spend time with Odin, the only reproductive male walrus in Europe, who lives at the Hagenbeck animal park, the zoo said.

Fittingly for a species classified as "vulnerable", he was born on International Biodiversity Day on May 22.
