The United Arab Emirates’ Hope probe entered Mars’s orbit on February 9, making it the first Arab interplanetary probe.

Video footage shows teams at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre as well as journalists near Burj Khalifa cheering as the historic announcement was made.

The probe traveled more than 480 million km over 204 days to study the Martian atmosphere and its layers.

“Today, a new phase of Arab scientific history has begun,” Dubai ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum wrote on Twitter. “A stage called trust … confidence in ourselves, our youth and our Arab populations … confidence that we can compete against the rest of the nations and populations.” Credit: Hope Mars Mission via Storyful
