Atlanta shooter charged with 'malice murder'

The 21-year-old man accused of killing eight people, predominantly Asian women, in Atlanta last Tuesday is facing additional charges of "malice murder" and aggravated assault.

That's according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, which said Monday its deputies were still investigating the crime and gathering evidence, and would not be making further comments on the case at this time.

"Malice murder" is an offence in the state of Georgia which alleges implied or expressed malice.

Robert Aaron Long was chased by police and taken into custody just hours after last week's violent rampage across three spas in the Atlanta area, and has been charged with eight counts of murder.

Long had suggested to investigators that a sex addiction led him to carry out the deadly shootings.

But the murders have shaken the Asian American community, who rallied in cities across the U.S. over the weekend, bringing a surge of recent hate crimes against Asians back into the national spotlight.
