Drought dries up a flamingo breeding ground

STORY: Thousands of flamingos usually hatch their

chicks in this Spanish wetland each year

But this season, a prolonged

drought has driven them away

Location: Fuente de Piedra, Spain

(Alberto Gonzalez Sanchez, Local)

"I have seen this lagoon completely full of flamingos. Some days 20,000 flamingos have been counted here, we have seen this all full of water and full of life, flamingos and different type of aquatic birds, and you get to see this now and it's a shame, it's a shame."

This spring was Spain's hottest and

second-driest since records began in 1961

Higher-than-average temperatures

are expected to continue this summer
