Gorbachev made German unification possible: Scholz

STORY: Speaking at a cabinet event in Meseberg north of Berlin, Scholz said "We will not forget that Perestroika made it possible to attempt to establish democracy in Russia and that democracy and freedom became possible in Europe, that Germany could be united and the Iron Curtain disappeared."

He added that the former leader's death comes at a time when democracy in Russia has "failed."
