STORY: This war amputee is getting a new lease of life

after being fitted with a new prosthetic leg

Location: Mosul, Iraq

Zaid Ammar was a teenager when he lost his right leg and three fingers on his left hand

He was hit by shrapnel from a missile strike during the war against Islamic State militants

"The treatment period was very difficult and I was psychologically devastated at that time. You know, I was walking normally and was healthy and then entered a completely different phase with an amputation, I had to get used to this life. I adapted and it became a memory. The moment the missile fell is engraved in my memory, but I tried to forget it over the days."

Ammar received a basic prosthetic leg in 2019, but still struggled with movement

Now, his more developed limb allows him to hike and climb mountains

"I was living my life once again and my life is back to normal. I visited a lot of places with the prosthetic limb. I had a strong will and determination, meaning I reached the top of a mountain like Mount Korek in Erbil and Mount Zawiya, I went to more than one place that I liked and hiked."
