STORY: Israeli airstrikes hit a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza on Tuesday -

Killing or wounding dozens of people, the enclave's civil emergency service said.

Missiles created craters at least 30 feet deep and set 20 tents ablaze inside the Al-Mawasi camp near Khan Younis according to the Gaza civil emergency service.

It said that the 65 victims included women and children - without providing a breakdown of deaths and injuries.

The Israeli military has called it a strike on a Hamas command center.

Raed Muammar lost one of his daughters in the explosions which began in the middle of the night.

"They were buried under the sand, the two daughters and their mother. I was under the sand as well. I got out and started looking for my daughters and my wife. I saw body parts of the neighbors in my tent - I did not know those were our neighbors' parts until I saw my family in one piece."

Israel has designated the Al-Mawasi area a humanitarian safe zone for displaced Palestinians.

The camp is crowded with families ordered by the Israeli military to flee there from elsewhere in the territory.

Nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been forced from their homes at least once, and some have fled as many as 10 times.

"Children became orphans... we became homeless. Where should we go? They said go to al-Mawasi, we went to al-Mawasi. They hit us, we were displaced many times. Where do we go?"

The Israeli military said it "struck significant Hamas terrorists operating within a command and control center embedded inside the Humanitarian Area in Khan Younis."

Hamas, the Islamist group that controlled Gaza before the conflict, denied allegations that gunmen were present in the targeted area, calling accusations it exploited civilian areas for military purposes "a clear lie to justify ugly crimes."

The war was triggered on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel's subsequent assault on Gaza has killed more than 40,900 Palestinians, according to the enclave's health ministry.

Both sides blame each other for a failure to reach a ceasefire that would end the fighting and see the release of hostages.
