Brazil’s indigenous people set up camp to defend land

STORY: These indigenous people are dancing to defend their land

Location: Brasilia, Brazil

They’re pressing Congress not to pass legislation

proposed by far-right president Jair Bolsonaro

that would allow mining and oil exploration on their reservations

Organizers are hoping to gather 7,000 people for a 10-day camp

held on the grass in front of government buildings

(SOUNDBITE) (Portuguese) CHIEF OF THE PATAXO INDIGENOUS PEOPLE, ALBIRANAN, SAYING:

"We are here to get together (with other indigenous people) and fight to defend our people and equality among nations. To make it known that we, the indigenous people, were the first inhabitants of Brazil and we are here to show Brazil and the world that we aren't dead and that we are living history, we are a living book."
