Indigenous-rights demonstrators took to the streets of Toronto on Friday, July 1, to protest what they called “economic genocide” against Canada’s aboriginal people.

Anti-government protests were expected on Canada Day, which celebrates the consolidation of three territories into present-day Canada in 1867. Activists argue that this holiday erases indigenous people’s contributions and fails to acknowledge the struggles they face today.

The footage shows a group of protesters holding a banner that says “economic genocide” in downtown Toronto. Also visible in the footage are orange shirts and an orange flag reading, ‘Every Child Matters,’ referring to a movement that seeks to raise awareness about traumatized survivors of Canada’s Indian residential schools.
