TotalEnergies faces complaint over Mozambique attack

STORY: Survivors of an insurgent attack in Mozambique, and relatives of the victims, have filed a complaint against TotalEnergies.

They allege negligence and indirect manslaughter, saying France's biggest energy company had failed to ensure the safety of subcontractors.

TotalEnergies has rejected the allegations, which it said were "inaccurate",

Militants attacked Palma in Cabo Delgado province in March 2021.

Many civilians were killed in areas close to LNG infrastructure projects, owned in part by TotalEnergies.

The plaintiffs, including three survivors and four relatives of the deceased, accuse TotalEnergies of failing to inform subcontractors of the risks of possible attacks.

They also say the company did not have proper safety or evacuation plans in place.

TotalEnergies said it had a security plan in place and carried it out.

The company said that, according to its information, "all Mozambique LNG personnel and their contractors and subcontractors were evacuated".

TotalEnergies also said that the security situation had improved in the region, where it plans to restart its LNG project before the end of the year.
