Floods threaten famine-stricken displacement camp in Sudan

STORY: The Zamzam displacement camp in Sudan's North Darfur is struggling with famine and facing threats of water contamination due to floods.

Satellite imagery published Friday by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab found nine out of 13 water points had become inundated.

That raises the risk of cholera and other diseases in an area already facing extreme levels of malnutrition where 500,000 people reside including Yahia Ali.

"We bought this tarpaulin to put the water in, but it is not healthy, it is not healthy, why....because all the dust that comes fills it. Look at this dirty water, even though it's dirty, we are forced to drink it."

More people are on the way as they flee recent conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The ongoing war and restrictions on aid deliveries are causing the famine according to food monitoring organizations who say similar conditions may exist in other parts of the conflict region.

Clementine Nkweta-Salami is the United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Sudan.

"Access has played a key role in our ability to ensure a comprehensive and timely response at scale to this operation.” // “It's not only a question of providing supplies, it's a question also of being able to do the necessary assessments and to ensure that our humanitarian response is designed in a way that addresses all the vulnerabilities that we identify.”

Nkweta-Salami says its critical the agency scales up is presence now… as the upcoming rainy season will provide a different set of challenges.

Conditions are seen improving during the harvest season in October though experts fear crops will be scarce as the war has prevented farmers from planting.

The deepening hunger crisis in Sudan erupted when the army and RSF triggered a war in April of last year.
