Roads and backcountry areas were reopened after avalanche control was carried out in Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon, east of Salt Lake City, overnight into Friday, January 7, officials said.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) said SR210, a road that runs through Little Cottonwood Canyon, was closed from 12.30 am to 8 am Friday morning as avalanche mitigation was carried out. Backcountry areas were closed from 10 pm Thursday, the department said.

This video of a controlled avalanche was released by UDOT on Friday morning as it announced that SR210 had reopened to all traffic, though with uphill delays.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City also warned drivers to watch out for “patchy black ice” on roadways across the region that morning. “If the road looks wet, it could actually be ice, take it slow!” they tweeted. Credit: UDOT Cottonwood Canyons via Storyful
