The Bronx Zoo announced that it will reopen on July 24 for the first time in four months in compliance with New York state guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) zoos and aquarium announced plans on July 9 to reopen the Bronx Zoo as well as other attractions around New York City, including the New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and Queens Zoo, all on Friday, July 24.

The locations had been shut down since March 16 due to coronavirus concerns.

New York state is scheduled to enter Phase 4 of its reopening on July 20, and WCS members can visit the zoos early, from July 20 to 23, the society said in a press release.

Health care workers were invited to attend the zoo for free through Labor Day.

“While we have been closed to the public, our essential staff has been here every day caring for the animals and maintaining park operations. The staff at our four zoos and aquarium have been amazing throughout this crisis, working tirelessly during this stressful time to meet the responsibilities we have to the animals in our care,” said Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny. “Our primary concern is the safety of staff and guests. Please do your part by wearing masks, keeping social distance, and using our many washing and sanitation stations.”
