New satellite imagery shows increased Russian military activity in Belarus, Crimea and various locations across western Russia near the Ukrainian border.

Maxar Technologies released the images on February 14 and said they were collected over the past 48 hours.

“Significant new activity includes the arrival of several large deployments of troop and attack helicopters, new deployments of ground attack aircraft and fighter-bomber jets to forward locations, the departure of multiple ground forces units from existing garrisons along with other combat units seen in convoy formation,” they said.

Images 1-4 show troops and equipment build up in Rechitsa, Belarus, roughly 55 km from the Ukrainian border in the north. Later images show that equipment has left the area.

Images 5-8 show helicopter deployments in Machulishchi airbase, Belarus, and in Lake Donuzlav in Crimea.

Images 9-13 show troops’ housing areas and equipment on flatcars in Yelnya, Russia.

Images 14 and 15 show troops that have departed the Pogonovo training area in Russia.

Images 16-19 show military activity in Soloti, Russia, roughly 45 km from the eastern Ukrainian border.

Images 20 and 21 show activity in Belgorod, Russia, about 60 km from the Ukrainian border and about 80 km from the city of Kharkiv.

Images 22 and 23 show su34 fighter deployment in Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Russia, according to Maxar.

US officials now estimate that Russia has massed more than 130,000 troops near the border with Ukraine, both within Russia and also in Belarus.
