A group of hikers at Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, considered themselves very lucky to have survived a precarious encounter with a bear as it appeared on their hiking trail and approached a teenage member of their group.

Jasmine Bartley and her family had just started a hike through the national park when the incident took place. Lisa Keswick, who recorded the video of the encounter, was visiting the national park from the United Kingdom and accompanied the Bartley family on the hike.

According to local reports, they had been hiking for no longer than 20 minutes when Bartley heard a gasp from someone behind her and turned around to find a bear approaching her brother.

“I couldn’t even breathe. I was terrified,” Bartley added. The video shows Bartley’s brother remaining as still as possible as the bear seemed to smell him for a moment before continuing on its way.

Keswick shared the video with Bartley, who posted it on a Facebook page to encourage other people to be constantly aware of their surroundings while in nature. Credit: Lisa Keswick via Storyful

Smart thinking! He was no threat to the bear so the bear just continued on his way. No need to panic. Great to see humans and wildlife getting along.

Bears attack people for only two reasons and both those reasons are the humans fault ! # 1. people get too close to a mother bear and her cubs.
    # 2 . People turn their back to a bear and run , huge mistake and the bear is only doing what it naturally does in the wild , it will chase you , catch you , then tear out your throat and rip off your face , bears always go for the head area.
Bears are not stupid they know who and what we are , humans, we are not on their dinner menu list , but will attack and due to their enormous strength and size humans end up the worse for wear.

If you are ever in a situation like that face the bear don't turn and run, try to appear bigger in your stance , the bear might even do a bluff rush , this means you are in its feeding territory or near its den and you need to leave immediately , walk backwards slowly always facing the bear as you retreat .

This kid was so lucky. I wish I had a bear come up to me. I love bears. I have no idea why everyone is so scared of bears.

That bear isn't even full grown. I'd be more concerned mama is still around.
