Authorities tested long-delayed flood barriers in Venice, Italy, on July 10, after the highest tide in 50 years had flooded the city’s historic canals and squares in 2019.

Venice authorities said the test, which was attended by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, was carried out successfully, and all 78 yellow sluice gates rose simultaneously above the water for the first time.

The multi-billion-euro Mose scheme, according to Reuters, was "designed in 1984 but still incomplete a decade after it was due to come into service” and “has been plagued by corruption and cost overruns. Credit: Comune di Venezia via Storyful
