Archeologists in Pompeii have discovered a 2,000-year-old fresco depicting what they said looks like a “distant ancestor” of the modern pizza, although it’s not the famous dish.

Footage released on June 27 shows the painting, which archeologists said was on the wall of an ancient house in Pompeii – destroyed when Mount Etna erupted in 79 AD.

“It looks like a pizza … but obviously it can’t be, strictly speaking, given that some of the most characteristic ingredients were missing, namely tomatoes and mozzarella,” experts said in a statement.

Archeologists believe the painting shows a flat focaccia covered with fruit, and seasoned with spices or possibly pesto.

Pompeii Archaeological Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel noted the contrast between a “frugal and simple meal” with “the luxury of silver trays” in the painting.

“How can we fail to think, in this regard, of pizza, also born as a ‘poor’ dish in southern Italy, which has now conquered the world and is also served in starred restaurants,” he said. Credit: Archaeological Park of Pompeii via Storyful
