Australian Ambassador to Japan Eats 'Fukushima Fish and Chips' After Nuclear Wastewater Release

Staff at the Australian Embassy in Japan have enjoyed a meal made with fish caught off Fukushima, after Japan began releasing treated nuclear wastewater into the sea from the destroyed nuclear plant there.

The staff were following Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who ate sashimi in a show of confidence in seafood safety after the water release.

The release of the Advanced Liquid Processing (ALPS)-treated water is necessary to fully decommission the Fukushima nuclear plant, which suffered extensive damage during a 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Kishida said. The plans were executed in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In July, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, visited Fukushima to reassure locals over concerns regarding the release of the treated water.
