A pet emu that was released from its home as the River Fire approached Chicago Park, California, was reunited with its family after being separated for more than a month.

Footage by Kaiti Lutz posted in a local Facebook group for missing animals from the River Fire on September 19 shows Stevie the emu being reunited with its family.

Lutz told Storyful that Stevie was released by his owner when the fire approached and subsequently destroyed their home near Chicago Park. Once the emu was spotted more than a month later near Pilot Hill, Lutz said she managed to track down the family by word of mouth and reunite them.

The River Fire burned 2,619 acres across Nevada and Placer counties but as of August 13 was fully contained, according to fire authorities. Local news outlet YubaNet said the fire destroyed more than 100 homes. Credit: Kaiti Lutz via Storyful
