Indigenous Water Activists Chant 'Stop Line 5' Outside White House

Indigenous activists rallied in Washington, DC, on October 11, urging US President Joe Biden to declare a national climate emergency.

Native American leaders, tribal members, and supporters gathered in the capital on Indigenous Peoples’ Day for the protest, part of the five-day People vs Fossil Fuels event. Demands include more extreme actions to curb carbon-producing fossil-fuel projects, according to the event’s website.

This video taken by Andrew Miller shows a group of activists outside of the White House chanting, “Stop line five,” in reference to a pipeline operated by Canadian company Enbridge. The pipeline transports petroleum under the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan. Critics of the pipeline, such as Oil and Water Don’t Mix, argue the aging pipeline is unsafe, citing the at least 1.1 million gallons of petroleum spilled from the pipeline over the last 50 years.
