Plywood Vessels Compete in Key West 'Minimal' Regatta

Nearly two dozen teams raced vessels made of thin plywood, duct tape and other bare-bones materials during the annual Schooner Wharf Minimal Regatta in Key West, Florida, on Sunday, May 29.

Video released by Florida Keys News Bureau shows the “sink or swim” challenge, a Memorial Day weekend tradition at the Key West Historic Seaport.

According to the entry requirements, teams are allowed to use three sheets of plywood, fasteners and duct tape, with “no caulking or adhesives” allowed.

A crowd of spectators cheered as a member of each team attempted to navigate the regatta’s course while keeping their makeshift craft afloat.
