Severe flooding and damage to buildings were reported in northern Mississippi on Wednesday, March 31, after strong storms hit the region with heavy rain and winds.

WCBI reporter Stephen Pimpo shared footage from Calhoun County showing the flooding and damage caused to the elementary and high schools in the town of Vardaman. Photos show school buildings exposed and buses with smashed windows.

The Calhoun County Journal reported all Vardaman schools were closed Wednesday after the storms damaged “multiple buildings.”

The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a tornado touched down in Hatley, northwest of Vardaman, around 1:54 am on Wednesday amid a tornado warning for parts of Calhoun County.

The NWS said a survey team would be in Calhoun and Monroe counties later Wednesday to assess the damage.
