A corpse flower, famed for its putrid stench, began its rare bloom at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, California, on October 31.

Timelapse video taken by staff at the garden shows the flower opening up inside a greenhouse as visitors come and go. The full blossom lasts about 48 hours.

The corpse flower, otherwise known as an Amorphophallus titanum, emits a rancid smell that attracts meat-eating insects that pollinate it, the "San Diego Botanic Garden:https://sdbgarden.org/corpse-plant.htm said. The blooming is a “rare and special event,” garden staff added, as most corpse flowers require 7-10 years to produce their first blooms, and even then only bloom every five to seven years.
