A gale warning was in effect for the west-central North Atlantic continental shelf on Friday, February 18, as winds up to 50 kt (57.5 mph) and scattered thunderstorms were expected in the region, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Footage filmed by the Oak Island Water Rescue shows a high surf and heavy fog at the local pier. “The Wilmington Harbor buoy has seas at 8.2 feet and a water temp of 56 degrees,” they wrote in a Facebook post. “Here at the Oak Island Pier we are seeing four- to six-foot surf.”

As the surf started to die down as of Friday afternoon, a thick fog formed and reduced visibility, Oak Island Water Rescue told Storyful. Credit: Oak Island Water Rescue via Storyful
