Walmart Arrest Prompts Planned Protest as DA Says Cops Acted Appropriately

An investigation concluded that police officers acted appropriately during the arrest of a man who allegedly rode a bicycle inside a Pennsylvania Walmart and shouted profanities at customers on July 20, the Berks County District Attorney said.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams said on Facebook that on Monday, July 20, Wyomissing Police responded to a report from the Walmart of a man riding an unpurchased bicycle around the store, playing loud music, and shouting profanities at other customers. Police said a store manager asked the man to leave but he refused.

By the time police arrived on the scene, the man was paying for the bicycle and is heard in this video asking officers numerous times the reason for his arrest and stating that he has a receipt for the bicycle.

“The defendant was detained by the Wyomissing Police and at all times during the encounter, the Wyomissing Police showed restraint, acted professionally, and did a good job deescalating the situation with the defendant, Stanley Gracius,” Adams wrote. “Mr. Gracius did not in any manner abide by the requests of not only the store manager of Walmart, but also the requests of the officers themselves.”

Wyomissing police said that the suspect was uncooperative and during the struggles tried to take an officer’s Taser, according to local media.

Gracius, 37, of Wyomissing, was charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault, as well as disarming a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, defiant trespass, and disorderly conduct.

A demonstration had since been planned at the Wyomissing Police Department in response to widely shared video of the arrest, the Reading Eagle reported.
