There's an increase of voters casting provisional ballots through the first four days of Maryland's eight-day early voting period for the 2024 presidential election. According to data from the Maryland State Board of Elections, more than 440,000 Maryland voters had cast a ballot early and in person, while more than 478,000 voters who requested a mail-in ballot filled them out and returned them to be counted. Local directors of elections told 11 News on Monday that they continue to see many voters casting provisional ballots. While it was too soon to size up the numbers or pinpoint the reasons why, some elections directors suspect it's fueled, in part, by a combination of reasons that include the rise in popularity of voting by mail, plus an excited and engaged electorate.
