Bison Calf Born In The Wild In The UK For First Time In Thousands Of Years

2 年前
When carrying out checks on a herd of bison in West Blean and Thornden Woods, near Canterbury, England this autumn rangers, discovered the adorable new arrival. Tom Gibbs and Donovan Wright have been keeping a watchful eye over bison since they were released into the ancient woodland over the summer and now they have a baby bison to watch over too!. The wilding initiative is a result of a collaboration between the charities Kent Wildlife Trust and Wildwood Trust as bison act as ecosystem engineers, creating light and space for wildlife through their natural behaviours. Only 7,000 bison remain in Europe are descended from just 12 zoo animals after going more or less extinct in the wild during the first half of the 20th Century. They have been absent from Britain much longer - around 6,000 years - after being wiped out due to hunting. The birth - which was discovered on 9th September - was unexpected as bison do not display obvious signs of pregnancy. The animals are wild, and so the rangers will take as much of a hands off approach as possible - while ensuring the calf has a care plan so that its needs have been met.
