Swiss Museum to Sell Monet Bought From Man Fleeing Nazis in 1930s

A museum in Zurich said it will sell a Claude Monet painting to split the profits with the family of the original owner, an art collector forced to flee the Nazis in the late 1930s.

L’Homme a l’ombrelle, a work from the 1860s, was first loaned to Kunsthaus Zurich by Jewish textile merchant and art collector Carl Sachs in 1934.

Sachs fled the Nazis from Germany to Switzerland in 1939, Kunsthaus Zurich said, and was forced to sell L’Homme a l’ombrelle and 13 other works to fund his new life in the country.

The sale is part of an agreement between the museum and Sachs’s heirs.

Profits from the sale will be split between the museum and the family.
