Navy Joins Search and Rescue Efforts Following Deadly Kerala Boat Capsize

At least 22 people died after a boat capsized in the Malappuram district of Kerala, India, on the night of Sunday, May 7, a local official told ANI.

The boat overturned at around 7 pm local time near the Tuvalthiram beach in the coastal town of Tanur, NDTV reported.

At least 40 ticketed passengers were aboard the boat, according to NDTV. An unknown number of non-ticketed passengers were also aboard the boat, NDTV said.

The Indian Navy joined rescue efforts following the capsize, officials said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that families of victims would receive a compensation payment of 200,000 rupees (about $2,445). Modi tweeted: “Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families.”
