Visitors asked by government officials to evacuate Maui waited in long lines at the main airport on Thursday, August 10, amid efforts to move tourists and residents away from areas impacted by wildfires, footage shows.

This video posted by John Pennell on Facebook shows a busy scene at Kahului Airport pre-dawn Thursday morning, with a long line of people waiting outside the terminal. “That line goes way back, I don’t know, 500 people deep,” Pennell can be heard saying.

At least 1,400 people stayed at Kahului Airport overnight Wednesday, according to Maui County, while waiting for flights out. Airlines have added additional departing flights, officials said.
