Wildfire Breaks Out on Canary Islands as Heatwave Grips Southern Europe

A wildfire broke out in Puntagorda, a village in La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, on Saturday, July 15, as much of southern Europe sweltered in a heatwave.

Footage released by the local government shows smoke rising in a forested area on a hillside.

The communications department for the Canary Islands president said strong wind gusts, lack of rain, and the dryness of the mountain were expected to complicate efforts to bring the fire under control.

Spain is one of several countries across Europe currently gripped by the so-called Cerberus heatwave, with temperatures forecast to remain high through mid-August, according to El Confidencial. Credit: 1-1-2 Canarias via Storyful
