Jamie Dimon slams 'childish' politicians

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon turned up the heat on congressional politicians on Wednesday for failing to act on a long-delayed new coronavirus relief package to help struggling Americans whose income has been wiped out amid the pandemic, accusing the lawmakers of acting like children.

Dimon during a New York Times conference on Wednesday said, quote, "This is childish behavior on the part of our politicians... Just get it done" -- declining to blame one side over the other.

He said the two parties should split the difference between the amounts they want to devote to coronavirus relief.

The White House, Republicans and Democrats have been at odds over the new coronavirus relief package, months after a $600 dollar weekly payment for unemployed Americans ran out.

U.S. SENATE DEMOCRATIC LEADER CHUCK SCHUMER: "So it's time for our two parties to sit down together and hash out a compromise on a bill that meets the needs of the American people."

The issue came up again in Congress on Wednesday, as U.S. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said he and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi invited Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans to bipartisan relief talks.

McConnell blamed Democrats for blocking earlier Republican efforts to approve $500 billion packages, which Democrats have called inadequate.

SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL: "Republicans' targeted proposal would have renewed that lifeline for the hardest hit small businesses, but again, Democrats blocked it."

Dimon also advocated higher taxes to pay for stimulus spending, but said hikes have to be done in a way that does not harm economic growth.
