Up to 2,000 gallons of oil may have spilled into the water after a barge carrying fuel broke from a tugboat and crashed into a bridge in Galveston, Texas, on May 15, local media reported citing officials.

The US Coast Guard (USCG) said a barge broke loose from a tug boat just before 10 am on Wednesday and crashed into the Pelican Island Causeway.

The impact caused part of the bridge to collapse and cut off the only road connecting Galveston to Pelican Island.

The bridge was opened to car traffic leaving Pelican Island and pedestrian traffic both ways on Thursday.

There were no reported injuries, the USCG said.
