Amazon to buy One Medical in healthcare push

STORY: Amazon announced on Thursday that it is buying primary care company One Medical in a deal worth $3.9 billion.

The deal, which includes debt, would add brick-and-mortar doctors' offices to the e-commerce giant's arsenal, marking a dramatic expansion of Amazon's healthcare ambitions.

In a statement, the senior vice president of Amazon Health Services said "healthcare is high on the list of experiences that need reinvention."

One Medical - a primary care provider that offers both telemedicine services and options to meet doctors in person - counts Airbnb and Alphabet's Google as customers.

Currently, Amazon offers virtual care services under the Amazon Care brand.

Shares of Amazon were up half a percent in morning trading, while shares of 1life Healthcare - One Medical’s parent company - soared almost 70 percent.
