Bengal tiger cubs charm zoo visitors in Mexico

The three-month-old tigers have quickly become celebrities at the zoo ever since their public debut in late September.

The cubs, which the zoo reported as all being healthy, have been sharing their enclosure with their mother, Shitara, since their birth.

But Shitara does not enjoy the spotlight as much as her playful cubs, according to the zoo, and does not greet the large crowds of visitors as often.

Veterinarian Claudia Galindo said Guadalajara zoo was lucky to have four new cubs as the birth of tigers is a complex and rare event.

As the tigers grow they will eventually be given to other zoos due to lack of space, Galindo said.

Bengal tigers are native to Asia with the majority of the 2,200 wild animals left found in India, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Conservation efforts by India have helped to stabilise the species but their numbers continue to decline due to poaching and the destruction of their habitat.
