STORY: :: King Charles' Windsor Castle gets set for Christmas with a living tree dressed in fairy lights and baubles

:: November 20, 2024

:: Windsor, England

:: Kathryn Jones, Royal Collection Trust curator

:: "Each year somebody is sent out in September to select the trees that are going to be brought in for Christmas. It's a living tree, so it's watered during its time inside the castle and at the end of Christmas it will be sent back to the Home Park and replanted."

:: "The decorations are recycled, so we try to reuse some of the decorations, but obviously we theme them. So this year in here we have red and gold to match the sort of royal magnificence. And right at the top of the tree is a star. And that's the representative of the Order of the Garter, whose symbol is a star. And that's the oldest order of knighthood in Britain. And St George's Hall, where we're standing, is actually the home of the order."

The castle, just outside London, put on a glimmering display with the main Christmas tree decked in some 3,000 lights and hundreds of decorations. The vast tree, taken from the nearby Home Park, is living and will be replanted after the holiday season, according to Royal Collection Trust curator Kathryn Jones.
