Grass Fire Ignites on San Bruno Mountain, South of San Francisco

Fire officials said “good progress” was being made against a slow-moving grass fire that broke out on San Bruno Mountain near the border of South San Francisco and Brisbane early on Friday morning, June 3.

The San Mateo-Santa Cruz unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said it was working to contain the fire, with assistance from police and fire departments from South San Francisco and Brisbane.

The blaze, dubbed the Tower Fire, was 29 acres in size and 70 percent contained as of 10:10 am, Cal Fire said.

The closest neighborhood, Mandalay Bay, was a mile away from the fire and no structures were being threatened, they added.

Footage shows emergency crews parked next to the scene on Bayshore Boulevard, next to Highway 101 in Brisbane, and a Cal Fire bulldozer cutting a fire line down San Bruno Mountain.

According to Cal Fire, the cutting of fire lines involves dozers “blading the ground, removing flammable plant material down to bare soil.”

Describing the footage, Cal Fire wrote: “As Cal Fire Dozer 1644 cuts fire line up San Bruno Mountain, you can see the blackened area, which extends to the top of the mountain, up to Tower Road.”

Police said roads in the area would remain closed as authorities responded, and authorities said Brisbane’s San Bruno Mountain State and County Park would be closed for the entire day.
