Satellite images show damage to areas on the eastern coast of Madagascar after Tropical Cyclone Batsirai made landfall on February 5, lashing the country with wind speeds of 165 km/h (102.5 mph).

Images by Maxar Technologies, who said they were collected on February 7, represent the moments before and after several towns were heavily damaged, including Mananjary, Nosy-Varika and Ambohitsara. Widespread flooding can be seen in and near many of the towns and significant building damage is also evident.

Madagascar’s National Disaster Risk Management Agency said at least 27 people had been killed and more than 70,000 residents were affected, with 62,096 evacuated to emergency shelters as of February 8.

Preliminary findings suggest wind damage to houses, schools, and health facilities in and around Mananjary city, along with flooded rice fields and homes in surrounding districts, according to a report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
