Smoke emitted by fires burning in the western United States could be seen in satellite imagery taken on the afternoon of September 7.

In California, crews were still working to contain the Dixie Fire, as it surpassed 922,000 acres by Wednesday. The fire, already the largest single-source fire in California history, may become the largest fire of any kind in the state’s history, a title held by 2020’s August Complex, which burned over 1,032,000 acres.
