Bison Fight for Mating Rights in Yellowstone National Park

Tourists on a road in Yellowstone National Park spotted two male bison fighting on July 28, amid the species’ annual mating season.

Footage taken by Ella Mayes shows two male bison butting heads in a courtship display for a female bison nearby. By the end of the video, one male appears victorious as the other turns and trots off.

Speaking to Storyful, Mayes said that it took about three hours to travel five miles due to delays caused by the herd’s rutting behavior.

According to the National Park Service, these ruts typically occur from June to September each year, with most of the activity happening between July and August. Credit: Ella Mayes via Storyful
