The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced William Ruto had won the Kenyan presidential election on Monday, August 15.

According to the post, Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya and five-time presidential candidate followed close behind with 48.85 percent of the votes cast.

In a press conference earlier in the day, four commissioners of the IEBC said they would not claim the results because of the “opaque nature” in which they were handled, local media reported.

“As you can see, the four of us are here and not at Bomas of Kenya, where the results are going to be announced because of the opaque nature of how this phase has been handled,” commissioner Juliana Cherera said.

“We urge Kenyans to be peaceful because the rule of the law is going to prevail,” Cherera added.

Later in the day, crowds took to the streets in Kisumu, Kenya, where Odinga has a large support base, to protest the outcome of the presidential election, according to news reports.
