STORY: Just hours after the UK election results, Britain's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer got the keys to Downing Street.

Greeted by jubilant crowds and waving flags, he pledged to use his massive majority to rebuild the country.

Speaking outside Number 10 for the first time on Friday (July 5), Starmer said the nation needed a political reset after years of chaos.

“Our country needs a bigger reset, a rediscovery of who we are, because no matter how fierce the storms of history, one of the great strengths of this nation has always been our ability to navigate away to calmer waters.”

Starmer added that he wanted to rebuild trust in politicians.

And that he understood Britons were disillusioned after years of scandal under the outgoing Conservatives.

They were roundly rejected in Thursday's (July 4) election and suffered the worst performance in the party’s long history.

Labour’s landslide victory, which saw the party win over 410 of the 650 seats in parliament, prompted Rishi Sunak’s resignation.

As voters punished him and his party for a cost of living crisis, failing public services, and a series of scandals.

"I have heard your anger, your disappointment and I take responsibility for this loss. To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly, but without success, I'm sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved."

Following Sunak stepping down, Starmer made his way to Buckingham Palace where he was formally appointed by King Charles III.

But despite his convincing victory, polls suggested there was little enthusiasm for him or his party.

Thanks to Britain's first-past-the-post system and a low turnout, Labour's triumph was achieved with fewer votes than it secured in 2017 and 2019, with the latter being its worst result for 84 years.

And the work really starts now. There's a tough road ahead for the new prime minister who must face challenges including Britain's high tax burden and creaking public services.
