Fraser Island Fire Continues to Rage as it Reaches 74,000 Hectares

Firefighting authorities restricted access to Queensland’s Fraser Island on November 27 as a bushfire going for more than a month reached 74,000 hectares.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) said it was not the time to visit the heritage-listed island.

As of November 29, the fire was burning on two fronts- one front located approximately five kilometres north of Kingfisher Bay Resort, and a second front located near Cathedrals on Fraser, a resort and campsite on the eastern shore.

“Weather conditions continue to exacerbate fire and smoke conditions,” QFES said. “Smoke will affect visibility and air quality on K’gari (Fraser Island) and adjacent mainland areas over the coming days.” Credit: East Booral Rural Fire Brigade via Storyful
