Heavy Rain in Hawaii Causes Massive Landslide on Kauai Highway

A strong thunderstorm and heavy rain showers caused an extensive landslide across a highway in Kauai, Hawaii, on Thursday, March 11.

Drone footage released by the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) shows the surface of Hanalei Hill falling over Kuhio Highway, cutting off access to Kauai’s North Shore.

The HDOT announced road closures in the area on Thursday as water and soil continued to slide down the hill.

The landslide occurred near an area that experienced a shallow slide during flooding in 2018, according to the HDOT.

Crews planned to perform assessments and debris removal on Friday after conditions were stabilized, they said. Credit: Hawaii Department of Transportation via Storyful
