Lava 'Dome Fountain' Spews Into 600-Foot Kilauea Volcanic Lake

Lava spewed upwards from in a ‘Dome Fountain’ on January 2 and 3 at Kilauea volcano, where a lava lake had risen to more than 600 feet by the afternoon of January 4.

This footage, released by USGS Volcanoes, shows lava emerging at an inlet to the lava lake. “Here it forms when lava rapidly emerges from a constricted vent beneath the lake surface,” USGS wrote in a tweet.

According to the National Parks Service, an island of “cooler, solidified lava” is currently floating in the lava lake. Credit: USGS Volcanoes via Storyful
