A sheriff’s sergeant stepped in to save a man from choking in Los Angeles on December 6, the sheriff’s department said.

Security footage shows a Los Angeles county sergeant using the Heimlich maneuver on a county employee who was choking on food in the alley behind a Department of Public Social Services office.

According to the sheriff’s department, Sgt Duncan saw the man “exit his van in distress” and “immediately got out of his patrol vehicle to render aid.”

“Seeing the man was choking and could not breathe, Sergeant Duncan immediately applied the Heimlich maneuver,” they said, adding: “After about five to six thrusts, Sergeant Duncan was able to dislodge the food particles that obstructed the man’s airway.” Credit: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department via Storyful
