The US Coast Guard (USCG) said it rescued three boaters on June 6 that became stranded about 395 miles southeast of Virginia Beach as Tropical Storm Alex was impacting the southern United States.

A Hercules aircraft crew stationed in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, was first at the scene and, after locating the vessel, observed crew members on deck signaling for help with flashlights, the coast guard said.

The boat’s main mast was broken, which can be a worst case-scenario for boats at sea, according to experts.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew also arrived at the scene and helped establish radio communication with the people stranded aboard, USCG said.
