Some women are opting to “go flat” after a mastectomy — choosing not to have breast reconstruction for a variety of reasons, including the desire to just be done with surgery. For many, it’s a bold decision that flies in the face of convention. “A lot of us women are sticking together and helping each other through this journey of being this new look,” says artist and survivor, Marianne Cuozzo. “We’re trying to make it so that it’s not this stigma.”
It's a personal decision. Not everyone wants to go through a painful, traumatic recovery AGAIN, after going through chemo, a mastectomy, and possibly radiation. As long as you're happy with yourself, nothing else matters. About 18 years ago, maybe more, my mother had a single mastectomy and was told she could not get an implant right away. By the time they said she could, she no longer cared to go through more surgical recovery after completing all those months of chemo and all the suffering it brought, plus having to reopen the wound from the scar to insert an implant, risk issues of infection, etc. All surgery has its risks, and some people would rather not put themselves through them, if it's not a necessity. Why should WE dictate what THEY should or must do with their bodies and physical appearance?

I admire your courage and I have to say that you all look very amazing awesome beautiful with flat! Any man divorced you for that reason doesn't deserve you. He is just a selfish unhuman being!
I love you all, beautiful shining stars!

I'm over 60 and a widow. If I had breast cancer I would not even consider reconstruction. I don't need to look "pretty" any more. Younger women under 50 or so- different circumstance!!

I went flat years ago and I am still glad I did.

i had reconstruction. i was 35 when i was diagnosed. I felt that i was to young to go flat. I had a partial mastectomy. In some ways i'm happy about the decision i made.

I went through 5 reconstructive surgeries and still need another so I've opted to have them removed, go back to flatter and love myself! If my partner doesn't like my new look, he can step and I'll move forward after a few days of crying to my toes, I'll be over it and him. We'll see.

According to Janet a mans feelings do not count what so ever in this decision. That is unfortunate

Awesome! Stay positive!

Finding women's clothes after going flat must be a hassle, since dresses, jackets, etc. are tailored to contour over breasts. Off-the-rack clothing must hang oddly.
I love you all, beautiful shining stars!

We'll see.
