STORY: People from five villages in the municipality of Ateca in Spain's northeast were evacuated after a fire started there, with high-speed rail traffic cut between Madrid and Barcelona during the night. The motorway between the two cities was closed in both directions for 8.5 miles in Ateca town.

In Galicia, video showed the aftermath of the wildfires with houses and cars burnt after fire scorched more than 59,300 acres of land.

Spain's 10-day heatwave was the third-longest since records began. Temperatures dropped in most of Spain on Monday (July 18), but temperatures are expected to rise again in the coming days, national meteorology service AEMET said on Wednesday.

Firefighters were battling flames in the regions of Castile and Leon, Galicia, Aragon, Madrid and Castile-La Mancha, with some local services running out of extinguishing capacity.

Around 4,000 people remained displaced following their evacuation in Cebreros, in the central province of Avila.
